Nexus One a.k.a Google Phone Rumors

http://www.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/NexusOnee.jpgPeople over at DroidTalk has confirmed that the Nexus One, a.k.a the “Google Phone” may not be as we all thought it was. Meaning google never said they were going to release their first smartphone, Nexus One. They have also claimed that the thenexusone.com site has vanished up in thin air. I guess we all got too excited over the whole concept that Google is gong to offer its first Smartphone.

Read the details:

First let me say that we here at DroidTalk have been just as guilty as other bloggers, news organizations, and forum sites in jumping on the rumor bandwagon regarding the Nexus One, a.k.a. the Google Phone.  For this we apologize.

This is what happens when you use blogs as source matierial. Google did not “announced they are releasing their first smartphone dubbed the Nexus One”. Google did not say anything even close to that. There is nothing known about the current or future availability of this phone beyond that Google is “dogfooding” new features on a non-market phone that was given to employees.  After an exhaustive 2 day search we failed to discover anything that one-hundred percent confirms that the Nexus One is in fact the rumored Google phone.

Everyone has been following theNexusOne.com website for pictures, videos, and updates about the “Google Phone,” guess what today the site is no longer in existence.  Not only has the site disappeared from the interwebs but, all the videos on their YouTube Channel have been pulled too.  I remember thinking when the site first started to show up that it looked familiar to another site that offers WordPress Templates, unfortunately I can’t find that site now.  My bet is the owners were cashing in on the Nexus One frenzy by milking the attention for traffic to their site and ad sales.  Let’s face it all the videos that popped up on their site were pointless, they didn’t show us anything about the phone, they left us with tiny little tidbits that kept us on a leash, eating up their bait and returning to the site for more.  Do you think Google swooped down out of the Cloud and forced these guys to remove their site and their videos?

Now the most damaging fact to emerge against the Nexus One being the almighty Google Phone is Sprint’s announcement today that their HTC Hero and Samsung Moment will be skipping 2.0, going directly from 1.5 to 2.1, this bit of information contradicts everything we have told about 2.1 being exclusive to the Nexus One.

Until someone from Google contacts DroidTalk or someone can give me an answer on how Mountain View can manage to build an ecosystem while trying to compete with it, I will remain skeptical that the Google Phone will ever come to market.  The only thing we know for sure is that the Nexus One has been certified by the FCC.  My bet is that the Nexus One is simply another Android running smartphone that may or may not be headed to T-Mobile, for now all we can do is wait and see.

Google sure has gotten a lot of free media attention from the Nexus One feeding frenzy and  you’ll notice they have been strangely quiet on the topic except for admitting they’re currently “dogfooding” the device.
